The employment rate for the population in Romania aged 20‐64 years increased by 2.5 percentage points in 2017 from the previous year, to 68.8 percent, moving closer to the national target of 70 percent set for 2020, National Institute of Statistics (INS) data show.
The employment rate for the population aged 20‐64 years was 66.3 percent in 2016.
“In 2017, the economically active population of Romania was 9,120 thousand persons, out of which 8,671 thousand were employed persons and 449 thousand unemployed persons,” INS said.
But employment rate of the working age population aged 15‐64 was only 63.9 percent in 2017, up 2.3 percentage points from the previous year.
The low rate of employment in Romania is mainly due to high underemployment rate of women and of the young generation.
“The employment rate was higher for men (71.8% as against 55.8% for women). By residence area, the employment rate was higher for residents from urban area (64.8% as against 62.7% in rural area). The employment rate for youth (15‐24 years) was 24.5%,” according to official data.
