Romania continues to be the country in Europe with the highest loss of population in 2018

The natural increase in May 2018 was negative, with an excess of deaths of 5623 over live births, data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) shows.

In May 2018 the number of births increased compared to April 2018. The number of deaths dropped from the previous month, and the number of deaths of children under 1 year increased in May 2018 compared to April 2018.

The number of marriages was higher, and the number of divorces was smaller than the previous month.

The births of 15301 children were recorded in May 2018, 2592 more than in April 2018.

The number of persons whose deaths were recorded in May 2018 was 20924, 695 less than in April 2018. The number of deaths of children under 1 year recorded in May 2018 was 130, an increase of 36 compared to April 2018.

A total of 12294 marriages were recorded at Register Offices in May 2018, 1503 more than in April 2018. A total of 2440 divorces were formally pronounced by final court decree and in accordance with Law No 202/2010, 137 less than in April 2018.

The number of live births fell by 1733 in May 2018 compared to the same month of 2017, and the number of persons who died was higher by 450 than in May 2017.

The natural increase was negative both in May 2018 (‐5623 persons) and in May 2017 (‐3440 persons). The number of children under 1 year who died in May 2018 was higher by 12 than the one recorded in May 2017.

The number of marriages decreased by 170 in May 2018 compared to the same month of the previous year. In May 2018, 475 less divorces than in May 2017 were formally pronounced by final court decree and in accordance with Law No 202/2010.
