Romanians’ budget for winter holidays at RON 1,717

Romanians’  allocated budget for winter holidays (Christmas and New Year’s Eve) in 2017 is RON 1,717, according to the study “Holidays shopping” made by MEDNET Marketing Research Center in the urban area (big cities +100,000 citizens, middle sized cities 30,000-100,000 citizens and small cities under 30,000 citizens).

Thus, more than half of the citizens will spend between RON 1,000-3,000 for Christmas and New Year’s Eve, while 26.3 percent of them will spend less than RON 1,000.

A significant part of the budget for the winter holidays will be allocated for food and non-food products. Thus,  people will spend on average RON 685 for food and RON 475 for non-food products.

Also, respondents estimate that they will buy gifts worth approximately RON 611.

In addition, those who spend this period traveling will pay approximately RON 819 and for going out/ going to restaurants they will allocate RON 300 on average.

In the big cities (+10,000 citizens), the average allocated budget for the winter holidays register an increasing trend compared with the last years, and the average budget for this cities category is RON 1,746.

In 2016 citizens from big cities wanted to spend in average RON 656 for food, while in 2017 the average budget reached RON 697.

Moreover, those who will go to trips/ travels for holidays are willing to spend a budget similar with 2016 (RON 850.03 in 2017 compared with RON 839.21 in 2016).

The allocated budget for gifts in the big cities (10,000 citizens) is growing year-on-year. (RON 621.63 in 2017 compared with RON 577.22 in 2016).

This year the share of those who intend to offer gifts for holidays (Christmas and New Year’s Eve) exceeds 90 percent, the most searched for are sweats, clothes/ footwear or cosmetics/perfumes. The beneficiaries of the gifts will be especially the member of families.

Less than a third of the respondents from urban area want to buy a natural Christmas tree. Most of the respondents (49.2 percent) have already an artificial Christmas tree, while 5.7 percent won’t decorate the Christmas tree.for winter holidays

Regarding the New Year’s Eve, 79.7 percent of the respondents want to spend it in Romania, while only 3.6 percent will go abroad. Out of those who will stay in Romania, 75.6 percent will spend the New year’s Eve together with the family/friends in their own houses or their friends’ houses, 11.7 percent will go in a resort, while 9.1 percent will spend the New Year’s Eve in a club or restaurant.

The survey was made on a representative sample in urban area, during November 24-29.

The respondents were 882 persons with ages between 18-65.
