Romanian politicians could bring Romania among top CEE countries, but fail, Erste president declares

Andreas Treichl, executive president of Erste Group, part of which is local Banca Comerciala Romana (BCR), has recently declared that Romania could leave the economic crisis faster than any other country in the region, yet fails to do so, finding itself in one of the worst situations in Europe.

During a press conference taking place in Wien on Thursday, Treichl stated that, as a solution, “the government and the president should make sure that they are working together and that they finally succeed to show Romanians that they have the country under control and should stop putting the blame on one another”.

Treichl also pointed to the poor use of European funds that Romanians have demonstrated so far. Out of a total of EUR 35 billion, Romania has only attracted EUR 38 million. “I don’t see another country in Europe that could do its job so badly in not profitting from the advantages it has. I love Romania, I love the Romanian people, I love my bank and I don’t understand what is happening”, Treichl said.

Regarding Romanian politicians and their contribution in restoring the local economy, Treichl critically stated that “They are not stupid, they are not dumb. They are very intelligent, they know what they have to do, they are well educated, there are more business people in the government than in other states and I have no clue why they don’t do anything”.
