Romanian Minister of Defense meets US Ambassador

Romanian Minister of Defense Gabriel-Beniamin Les met with US Ambassador Hans Klemm on Friday, on which occasion he stressed that the involvement of the United States is “essential” for strengthening the defense and deterrence against all threats to European security.

Talks centered on developments in the regional and international security environment, as well as ways to intensify cooperation in the field of defense, bilaterally and within NATO. “Minister Les presented the strategic positions of the Government in the fields of defense and security, centered on the commitment to provide 2 percent of GDP to defense, and noted the importance Romania gives to the Strategic Partnership with the US,” a press release by the Ministry of National Defense (MApN) reads.

The Minister of National Defense appreciated the solid commitment of the United States and the presence of American troops on the national territory, pointing out that US involvement is essential for strengthening defense and deterring against all threats and risks to European Security, especially those on the eastern flank of the Alliance,” the press release adds.

Minister Les presented the stage of implementation of decisions adopted at the Warsaw NATO Summit, with a focus on achieving an advanced presence of the Alliance on the eastern flank, and stressing the importance of intensifying efforts for the efficient implementation and at the deadlines agreed of decisions in the field.

Ambassador Klemm thanked the Romanian official for Romania’s contribution to the regional and international security, stressing “the operational efforts of the Romanian armed forces in Afghanistan, Iraq and other theaters of operation.”

The Ambassador reiterated the solid commitment of authorities in Washington for the consolidation of the defense dimension of the Strategic Partnership, which resulted in the increase of the presence of US forces in the region and the intensification of bilateral programs on preparation and trainings, the MApN statement said.
