Timisoara-born alpinist Horia Colibasanu has taken on this Thursday for a a new Himalaya summit, this time to open a new route to the highest peak of the world, according to News.ro.

According to a release of the alpinist’ representatives, the 2018 expedition will begin on April 3, once with the trekking on Khumbu valley, in Nepal, and will close at the end of May.

„This year expedition is a challenge for me, as an alpinist of of high altitude. I aim to try the opening of new climbing routes for Everest peak, based on the experience until now and especially on the one from last year, when I succeeded to stay for several days in row at an altitude of over 8,000 meters,” said Colibasanu.

His partner of expedition will be Peter Hamor (53), a Slovakian alpinist who climbed all the 14 peaks of over 8,000 meters. Hamor and Colibasanu have a team experience of 8 years.

This year takes place the 20th international expedition of Colibasanu and the 15th one in Himalaya.

„I’m counting very much on our team for the success of this climb, taking into consideration the challenge that we have chosen for 2018,” added Colibasanu.

Colibasanu had successfully climbed 8 out of the 14 peaks of over 8,000 meters worldwide. He succeeded in 2017 to reach Everest peak (8,848 meters), without additional oxygen and without sherpa. It was a performance for which he was rewarded with the National Order „Star of Romania”, Chevalier rank, the greatest award given by the Romanian President Iohannis.

He is the only Romanian alpinist who was awarded with „Spirit of Mountaineering” prize, from British Alpine Club, the first and most presigious mountain club worldwide.

Colibasanu attended 19 international expeditions during his career, making a team with partners from different countries, such as Slovakia, Russia, Spain and Poland.
