The government will discuss during its Wednesday meeting a memorandum for Romania’s candidacy as a potential location for the headquarters of the European Medicines Agency, which is currently based in London.
The EMA will have to relocate from the British capital, once the United Kingdom leaves the European Union.
Romania’s strategy for attracting the EMA is not clear right now. According to the Guardian, up to 20 member states are seeking to take the HQ of the agency, with its 900 highly skilled staff. The British journalists stated that the medical and pharma industry of the new host country will benefit from such a move.
The EMA acts as the regulatory agency deciding if products are safe for the European single market. The agency serves a market of over 500 million people living in the EU.
Romania’s pharma market inched closer to the EUR 3 billion milestone value last year.
