Romania got a score of 48 points in the corruption perceptions index 2017 published by Transparency International, a slight improvement from the previous year. The ranking shows that Romania got a better result compared to neighboring Ukraine (30), Bulgaria (43), Hungary (45), Serbia (41) and Republic of Moldova (31).

At EU level, the average of the score is 66 points. Out of the 180 countries ranked by Transparency International, the best performers were New Zealand, Denmark and Finland, while the poorest results were obtained by Syria, South Sudan and Somalia. Romania was ranked 59.

This year, the index found that more than two-thirds of countries score below 50, with an average score of 43

“In the next years we consider that Romania, aside from the coercive measures, has to have a systematic approach to prevent corruption, of making decision makers responsible and to involve the local communities more,” said Transparency International Romania. The association says that the private sector can also shape the way in which the society reacts to corruption by strengthening the compliance and integrity mechanisms.

Transparency International said that the implementation of an integrity system and good governance principles at the level of local public authorities can also help. Companies can also improve their ethics management system.
