Romania is up 4 positions to 10th place on wind attractiveness in the latest Country Attractiveness Indices report issued by Ernst & Young consultancy. In solar, the country moved up 2 positions to 23rd. Overall, the country ranks 13th on renewable potential, including all clean sources, unchanged from the previous report.
Wind energy company Monsson Group began construction on its 150 MW wind park worth EUR 245 million, making E&Y move Romania in top 10, alongside Poland and Ireland.
E&Y says emerging markets will continue investments in renewable energy, while Europe’s appetite for renewable is stifled by the sovereign debt crisis. This lead to several countries cutting support schemes for output from clean sources. Spain, which was the most attractive country for renewable investment five years ago, but now, exited the top 10, as the Government has temporarily suspended premiums paid to new renewable plants. Portugal has also gone on this path, while other Italy and Ireland cut feed-in tariffs (FITs) and other support mechanisms.
Romania’s wind installed capacity was 982 MW at end-2011, according to Romania’s Wind Energy Association (RWEA).
