Romania’s presidency of the Council of the European Union will not be an easy one, Sergiu Oprescu, head of the Romanian Association of Banks (ARB), warns.

According to Oprescu, Romania’s mandate will be marked by two key moments, namely Brexit and the setting of the budget of the European Union for the 2020-2024.

“Romania will be at the epicentre of decisions at EU level and will have an important say in setting the agenda, position and development priorities of the community space with a direct impact on the 500 million European citizens, including the 20 Romanian citizens. The presidency of the Council is above all an exercise in responsibility, a challenge and at the same time an opportunity to show balance at the level of speech and a clear vision.

For six months, Romania will be carefully watched and analysed by its European partners, in particular when it comes to elements if general vision it will take on and of the technical expertise it will show via its representatives,” Oprescu said.

“We must say that at the same time this will not be an easy mandate because Romania’s presidency if the Council of the European Union is marked by two key moments: Brexit will become official and the EU budget for the period 2020-2024 will be set. Romania will be at the helm of the EU and will have to navigate a sensitive territory, and our diplomatic ability will be tested continuously,” Oprescu said.

According to Oprescu, Romania will have to get actively involved in the big European subjects, but also to understand to exploit opportunities.

Sergiu Oprescu said that the period before presidency is as important as the presidency itself, and during the next months the priorities should be set.
