In his speech at the reception held on Europe Day, Romanian president Klaus Iohannis stressed sent a message to politicians that without democracy, the rule of law, correct laws there is no prosperity for most citizens. “Taking their substance from euroscepticism, some politicians are questioning the role and relevance of the EU. We hear voices in Romania that blame Europe and Brussels for almost anything, upset on European standards. What these politicians do not say is that without democracy, the rule of law, correct laws there is no prosperity for most citizens. In that case, there would only be privileges for a small group that is in power.”
Democracy is one of the most precious gifts of Europe, President Klaus Iohannis said. However, a strong Europe needs strong policies, Iohannis argued. Negotiations within the bloc will be difficult, he warned, given the many pressures posed by Brexit and the new challenges, namely migration, security and defence.
The Romanian head of state also stressed Romania’s commitment to join the eurozone as soon as possible, saying that “the euro remains one of the most tangible proofs of European integration.”
Iohannis also said Romania is continuing its bid to join Schengen.
