President Klaus Iohannis sent a letter on Monday to the presidents of political groups in Parliament to invite them to consultations at the Cotroceni Palace on Wednesday, on the subject of justice system legislation. According to the Presidency, each party delegation can have a maximum of five persons.
Consultations are scheduled to begin on Wednesday at 3 pm and each political party will have 30 minutes allocated for discussions with the president.
The first group to arrive at Cotroceni will be the PSD, followed by ALDE, PNL, USR, UDMR, PMP and the national minorities group.
President Iohannis reacted to the critical opinion issued by the Venice Commission on the new justice laws passed by the PSD-ALDE coalition by saying the Justice minister, Tudorel Toader, has compromised his credibility, which should lead to a resignation.
“President Iohannis is urging the Romanian Parliament to take into account the opinions expressed in the Venice Commission report and carefully reevaluate the changes brought to the justice laws, the criminal code and the criminal procedure code, in order to stop the negative impact on justice and the rule of law,” said a statement by the Presidency last week.
