President after meeting with PM Dancila: Romania’s foreign policy must remain balanced, predictable

President Klaus Iohannis met with PM Viorica Dancila on Tuesday to discuss and clarify issues related to Romania’s foreign policy, including the subject of moving Romania’s embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, an idea which PSD leaders have been supporting in the past weeks.

Other participants in the meeting were deputy PM for the implementation of Romania’s strategic partnerships, Ana Birchall, and the Foreign Affairs minister, Teodor Melescanu.

President Iohannis emphasised the fact that Romania’s foreign policy must be conducted only in the country’s interest and that internal tensions on these types of issues must cease immediately, so that the country can maintain its credibility in its relations with the US, the EU and NATO, as well as the other strategic partnership in which the country is involved.

The president also noted that foreign policy should be characterized by consistency and predictability, and that there are a few red lines that political decision makers have never crossed, regardless of their political leanings. A change in Romania’s balanced position would only bring worry and unease.

In this context, Iohannis asked for loyal and fair institutional cooperation, in line with the legal and constitutional framework, pointing out that this is the conduct that should guide all the actions of the Government.
