Romanian Prime Minister Viorica Dancila said on Saturday she firmly condemns the violent actions that took place in Bucharest on Friday evening, which were carried out by ‘organised groups’ that hijacked a citizens’ manifestation.

According to Dancila, who is currently on holiday, the reports of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) shows that “the violent acts were carried out on several occasions by groups of well-organised people, which attacked the law enforcement forces, institutions and damaged public goods, with the purpose to trigger a conflict between the those protesting in a non-violent way and the law enforcement forces, by making state’s authority become vulnerable,” the PM’s office said in a statement.

Currently, the Government expects the competent institutions to carry out all the necessary investigations so that those guilty of violent actions are held accountable.

At the same time, Prime Minister Viorica Dancila asked from the Romanian Intelligence Service a complete emergency report on the individuals who prepared and provoked the violence, as well as an investigation into the way in which the institutions of the Romanian state with attributions in supplying with data and information on the intentions of hijacking of public protest actions acted.

“Unfortunately, street violence is accompanied by a series of statements by political leaders trying to exploit for their own benefit the dramatic effects of these events by launching accusations against the state forces and state institutions and inciting the population against them,” the statement reads.

“We call for more responsibility in public statements and the abandonment of the use of regrettable events for electoral purposes,” the PM’s statement adds.

Prime Minister Viorica Dancila respects the right of citizens to manifest and express their opinions in public, and believes that this right should in no way be confiscated by politicians or groups that have interests to destabilize order within society, the statement concludes.

On Friday, protesters took to Victoriei Square in Bucharest to rally against the government led by Viorica Dancila. They were met with tear gas and water cannons by the Gendarmerie. Their reaction was considered disproportionate by the leader of opposition party Save Romania Union (USR) Dan Barna, who demanded the resignation of MAI head, Carmen Dan and that of Bucharest Prefect Speranta Cliseru, who authorised the Gendarmerie to use force against the protesters.
