Ookla: Romanians’ download speed drops by -23.6 pct when roaming in the EU

According to Ookla, the company behind Speedtest.net, a web service that provides free analysis of internet access performance metrics, compared to local speeds, Romanians lose on average -23.6 percent of the download speed when roaming in the EU.

As per the data presented in the report released by Ookla on Wednesday, the average download speed in Romania during Q1 2018 stood at 28.74 Mbps. While roaming in the EU, Romanians see an average download speed of 21.95 Mbps, which represents a -23.6 percent decrease in average mobile speeds.

The report used Speedtest data from the first quarter of 2018 in order to assess which countries’ residents are having the best (and worst) internet speed experiences abroad.

The sharpest contrast between the local download speeds and those they experience abroad were recorded in the case of Dutch residents, which saw a -50.2 percent decrease when roaming. However, as beneficiaries of the third fastest mobile speeds in the world, they will experience drops in download speeds when roaming, except for when traveling to Norway and Iceland.

On the other hand, Italians enjoyed a 15.4 percent increase in download speed when traveling. Estonians, Latvians and the Portuguese also saw faster downloads abroad.

The mean download speed in the EU when customers are at home is 30.57 Mbps, but that slows 16.6 percent to 25.50 Mbps when Europeans roam across a border.
