“There is a small dictator in each of us; abuse and discrimination on a small scale are big problems that need to be exposed and discussed. Children and the elderly are sure targets in many parts of the world. The same with refugees. As any society, many families have their dirty laundry- that eventually must be cleaned,” says Alexandru Solomon, director of the One World festival that showcases productions on human rights topics.

The films in the festival “wash traumas in public, exhibits hidden conflicts, make us laugh or cry when witnessing the show of people’s rise or fall,” says Solomon.

One World is close to starting the fifth edition, which will take place between March 13 and 18 in Bucharest under the logo “Sharp films.” “Sharp films can hurt. They always leave a trace,” says Solomon.

The festival will kick off with a concert by Shamanelism, a band whose members are convicts in the juvenile penitentiaries in Craiova and Rahova.

Depending on the topics that are approached in the films, the festival comprises various sections such as the Criminal Section, the Underage and Elderly, the Politics Section, Family Problems, Militants and Outraged, Work and Reward, Pasport Section or Albania Special.

The closing production is a documentary by Joshua Atesh Litle called The Furious Force of Rhymes, which is a story of hip-hop as music of protest on a global scale. Looking at five different sub-cultures, the director shows how rap developed into the language of the underdogs.

The price of a ticket is 8 lei, and can be purchased from Cinemateca Eforie, Cinema Union, Cinema Corso. Special screenings at the Horia Bernea studio are free of charge. The price of a subscription, which can be bought from the Ticketfan website is 60 lei, which ensures access to all the films.
