Netflix study reveals Romanian users’ content consumption patterns

Netflix members across the world are creating their own rules when it comes to content consumption, and Netflix prides itself on allowing its users to choose exactly what they like.

This year only, users have watched over 140 million hours of series, films, documentaries or stand-up comedy shows each day – which adds up to around 1 billion hours per week.

Romanians are also captivated by the world of stories and TV entertainment. Previous research by Netflix among the platform’s users have shown that binging has already become a habit and that people have developed new consumption patterns at a global level.

The first study into the behaviour of Romanian Netflix users has revealed very interesting statistics. Binging is defined by users as sessions in which they watch between 2 and 6 episodes in a row. However, some shows are so beloved by members that they may even end up watching a whole season in the first 24 hours after the show is released.

In Romania, Stranger Things 2 was the most rapidly watched show in 2017. It’s probably not a coincidence that the day that saw the most streaming was October 29, when the new season of Stranger Things was released.

The most intriguing part of the study shows that one Romanian member has watched “War of the Worlds” with Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning no fewer than 179 times in 2017.

It seems that Romanians like suspenseful shows and movies, since the most popular shows are House of Cards or Narcos.

There are a lot of things to be said about what Romanians have watched, but the question of how they’ve watched also leads us to an interesting discussion. Although binging was a general consumption pattern in 2017, not all shows are being watched in the same way. When it comes to online streaming, different patterns can be observed – action-packed narrations can be said to have been devoured, while reflective dramas are better described as having been savoured by users.

Shows that have been devoured by Romanians in 2017 (watched for more than two hours a day): Suburra: Blood on Rome; The Keepers; The OA; 13 Reasons Why; Iron Fist; Cable Girls; The Mist; Fauda; Santa Clarita Diet; El Chapo.

Shows savoured by Romanian users in 2017 (watched for less than two hours a day): Big Mouth; Neo Yokio; The Crown; Friends from College; White Gold; Dear White People; Disjointed; You Me Her; Frontier.
