Minister Vasilescu: New wage bill for public sector workers could be approved by Parliament in May

The minister of labor, Lia Olguta Vasilescu, said that the new public sector wage draft bill could be debated and voted in Parliament by the end of May, but there is a risk that president Klaus Iohannis could reject the draft bill and send in back to the MPs.

“I would like that at the end of May the law to have already been adopted by the Romanian Parliament and sometime in June, if president Klaus Iohannis sends it back (to Parliament – e.n.), to have enough time to restart the procedure in Parliament,” said Vasilescu.

She said that she has the “intuition” that the president will reject the draft bill.  She added that the bill will be submitted to the Parliament next week.

“It’s clear that there will be more changes that will have to be made, I hope a small number,” said the minister. She explained that some amendments could be accepted, but not any major changes.

The social-democrats were set to meet on Thursday to sign the draft bill in a bid to show that the new law will attract enough support in Parliament.

According to the figures published by the ruling party PSD, the wage of a resident physician will increase two fold to EUR 1,266 next year, while a senior physician in the emergency unit might earn EUR 3,705 starting next year, almost triple the wage he or she receives right now. The other categories of public sector workers will see their wages go up gradually by 2022. For instance, the wage of a junior teacher will be hiked from RON 1,705 this year to RON 3,237 in 2020 and RON 3,916 in 2020.

At this moment, it is not clear how the government will finance this sharp increase of the wages and the head of PSD, Liviu Dragnea, did not expand on this.

Minister Vasilescu said earlier this week that the new public sector law will be approved at least for as long as the PSD remains in power.
