The second-in-command Marian Mihail Calin might be the new interim CEO of the Romanian Railway Authority (AFER) starting Monday, after the resignation of Victor Badea due to the scandal resulted from the wages cut for AFER’s employees up to 40 percent, according to the sources from railway field.

„It seems that starting Monday the interim of AFER will be taken over by Marian Mihail Calin, currently the second-in-command of AFER. Also from Monday there will be taken measures of wages recalculation to the previous values before their cut,” said the sources.

According to them, the CEO of AFER submitted the resignation starting October 9.

The authority is confronting with a scandal due to the wages cut decision up to 40 percent taken by the institution’ head as a result of a control of Court of Accounts. In this context, over 150 employees of AFER members of the Railway Union AFER protested on Monday October 2, in front of the Transports Ministry, unsatisfied about the wages conditions.

„After 40 years of work, AFER’ employees get RON 1,100, net salary and this is the reason why I think the railway safety will be affected by the AFER’s  activity cease,” said Alexa Ioneta, the president of the Railway Union AFER.

According to her, the wages of AFER’ employees decreased starting September 6 up to 40 percent, meaning between RON 250-2,000.

„AFER didn’t incur wages increases since 2008. This is where AFER issues started, following the controls of the Court of Accounts, the latter filed lawsuits, currently in development,” concluded Ioneta.

According to Badea, the causes of the wages decrease in AFER was the change of the legislation, respectively the appearance of Law 284 of public institutions’ salaries.
