French president Emmanuel Macron has called Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal a “mistake” and reassured President Rouhani of Iran that Europe will remain in the 2015 agreement, Deutsche Welle reports.

Macron added that Europe needs to maintain stability and peace in the Middle East, and that it faces a “historic moment” as it is now “in charge of guaranteeing the multilateral order that we created at the end of World War II and which today is sometimes being shaken.”

The French president had visited Donald Trump at the end of April, in an effort to convince him to remain in the Iran deal, as well as come back to the Paris Climate agreement.
