President Klaus Iohannis suggested that the sharp increase of the budget deficit in the first two months was generated by a gap between the amounts in tax revenue collected to the budget and the increase of the wages.
The head of state said that it’s fair to wait for the end of the first quarter of the year, adding that he will comment more then.
“It’s clear that once the wages have grown and there wasn’t a focus on (tax – e.n) collection, these issue emerged. I hope that this will be understood at government level and that we will return to a sustainable budget execution,” said Iohannis.
Romania’s budget deficit reached 0.59 percent of GDP (RON 5.5 billion) in the first two months of 2017 compared to a surplus of RON 397.1 million in the same period of 2016.
