“The historical triumph at Marasesti, together with the victories of Marasti and Oituz, saved our statehood, gave us the dignity to exist as a nation and revived the hope in the Great Union. Once century later, Romania is a powerful state allies and partners can rely on, a pillar of stability and security in this region, and this is largely due to the Romanian Army,” Iohannis said in his speech at the ceremony commemorating the Centenary of Battle of Marasesti.

According to the head of state, for more than 70 years, Europe is living “the longest period without armed conflicts” and said that this is due to the existence of the European Union, which Romania joined ten years ago.

“Through the dramas and totalitarian regimes that have marked it with blood, the 20th century shows us that freedom, democracy and peace are not obtained and preserved without the constant and continuous commitment of each generation in favour of the humanist values upon which the European civilisation is based.

“I call on you, as the deepest sign of honouring the past to join our energies to make the European project a solid construction for the future of next generations. The active involvement, including via the creation of a country project, represents a concrete commitment for the development of our country.
