World No.1 tennis player Simona Halep got in the semifinals at Roland Garros after a 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-2 win against No. 12 Angelique Kerber. The Romanian tennis player will face Garbiñe Muguruza in the next match.
Halep is 6-4 against the German at tour level and, after Wednesday’s win, is 5-0 in deciding-set matches against her. That’s the sixth time Halep has reached the semifinals of a Grand Slam, matching the most by a Romanian male or female in the Open Era (Ilie Nastase), according to ESPN.
“Halep’s victory eliminates Caroline Wozniacki from the race for No.1 on next week’s rankings, and puts it down to a winner-take-all clash against Garbiñe Muguruza, who thumped two-time French Open champion Maria Sharapova over on Chatrier.
Muguruza and Halep haven’t played since the 2017 Western & Southern Open final, where the Spaniard was equally emphatic en route to the Premier 5 title. They were set to face off at the Qatar Total Open semifinal back in February before Halep had to withdraw from the tournament due to injury,” said the WTA.
