After almost  a decade, the first flight directly from Montreal, Canada, to Bucharest took place today. Operated by Air Canada Rouge, the AC 1928 aircraft arrived at Henri Coanda International Airport at 09:55, after nine hours of flight.

The Canadian company will operate four weekly round-trip flights, two to Montreal and two to Toronto. Towards Montreal, the races will be on Tuesdays and Fridays leaving Bucharest at 13:45 and arriving at 16:20. From Montreal, the flights will take off on Monday and Thursday at 18:00 and will arrive in Bucharest at 09:55.

Towards Toronto, departure days are Wednesday and Sunday at 13:45 and arrival at 17:00. On their return, the aircraft will depart on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 17:30 and will arrive in Bucharest at 09:55. Air Canada Rouge will operate these flights until October 5, 2018.

“These flights represent a resumption of this direct transatlantic option for Romanian passengers and has a symbolic value because, after 9 years, we have again a direct flight across the Atlantic and it is also a plus for all those who want to travel from here in Canada or from Canada to Bucharest, avoiding stopovers on European hubs usually takes less time to travel and, especially for those who travel with children, is a great advantage in terms of road comfort,” said, after the inauguration, the spokesman of the Bucharest National Airport Company, Valentin Iordache.

He said the hours of departure to Canada are advantageous for Henri Coanda airport, as they are out of peak hours.

“There will be two races to Montreal and two races to Toronto each week. Hours are also very advantageous for the airport because they are out of peak hours, so passengers will benefit from a much shorter time spent on security checks and border check-in is standard, and is a general plus for all because, here we are, starting a transatlantic four-weekly flight. We are, of course, looking forward to continuing transatlantic flights and the US relationship,” mentioned Iordache.

He also expects the airport to collect passengers from Moldova, Bulgaria or Ukraine.

“The area where Henri Coanda Airport collects passengers for medium-sized routes already includes Moldova and a good piece of Bulgaria. As for the long-haul flights, we expect this area to expand from all over the country, but also from Moldova, Ukraine and Bulgaria. There are no significant traffic congestion problems because these races are not scheduled at peak intervals, so we will flatter this daytime traffic curve, but not record highs on peak hours , but just completing off-peak capabilities that are currently available and other high-capacity races,” added Iordache.
