Eurostat: Romanian tourists who traveled outside Europe represented 1 pct of total in EU

Romanian tourists who traveled outside Europe represented 1 percent of the overall from the European Union in 2015, according to European Office of Statistics (Eurostat).

In 2015, more than one in four nights were spent outside EU by tourists from UK (28.4 percent), Estonia (27.9 percent), Belgium (13.1 percent), Croatia (20.5 percent), Lithuania and Austria (both 20.3 percent) and Luxembourg (20.2 percent). One the other side, less than one in ten nights were spent outside EU by tourists from Romania (one percent), Greece (5.6 percent), Czech Republic (6.2 percent), Portugal (7 percent), France (7.1 percent), Bulgaria (7.7 percent), Spain (8 percent), Poland (8.1 percent) and Slovakia (9.7 percent). In average, 15.4 percent of the overall nights spent by tourists outside EU were in accommodation units outside the region.

The main destination of EU citizens who traveled outside region in 2015 was USA (13.8 percent), followed by Turkey (10.4 percent) and Morocco (4.6 percent).

Among the main 30 touristic destinations from EU in 2015, six were in Spain, Italy and France, four in Germany, two in Greece and Austria and one in Ireland, Croatia, Netherlands and UK.

The Canary Islands from Spain were in 2015 the most popular destination in EU, with 94 million nights in accommodation units. Other Spanish regions in the top 10 destinations from EU were: Catalonia, Balearic Islands and Andalusia.
