Almost 40 percent of the country’s population never connected to the internet, the highest percentage in the European Union, according to Mediafax quoting Eurostat data. The average non-usage rate in the EU dropped from 43 percent in 2006 to 18 percent this year.

Denmark reported the lowest non-usage rate, of only 3 percent, followed by Luxembourg with 4 percent, Holland with 5 percent and Finland, Sweden and Great Britain with a 6 percent rate each.

In 2006, the non-usage rate in Romania stood at 74 percent, according to Eurostat, but the institution warns the figure might not be exact because of a discontinuity in the series of data upon which the study was based.

At EU level, 65 percent of citizens aged 16 to 74 used the internet daily in 2014, compared to 31 percent in 2006. The daily usage rate varied this year from 32 percent in Romania to 85 percent in Luxembourg and 87 percent in Denmark.
