The Romanian Ornithological Association (SOR) and the Romanian subsidiary of Italian utility Enel have jointly launched an app, the first of its kind in Europe, which will be used to track the population of white storks in Romania.

The pilot project for counting the birds will be carried out in the July-August period and will be followed by similar actions in the future. The smartphone app is called “Uite barza” (See the stork) and can be downloaded for free. The employees of Enel, who are on the field to keep the grid operational, will also contribute to this campaign.

Since 2010, companies within Enel group have installed on electricity poles close to 900 supports for stork nests and additional equipment to protect the birds from the risk of electric shock.

It is estimated that the population of white storks, a protected species, stands at around 4,000-5,000 pairs in Romania, while across Europe this figure stands between 180,000 – 220,000 pairs.

The app can be downloaded at this link.

Enel has 2.8 million clients in Romania and employs over 3,100 people. The company has electricity and supply operations in Muntenia Sud, Banat and Dobrogea regions.
