Decathlon opened today its first logistics centre in Southeastern Europe after an EUR 4 million investment. Located in Stefanestii de Jos, near Bucharest, it has a total area of 29,000 square meters and will supply at least 30 stores in Romania, Bulgaria and Greece countries with sports articles and equipment.

“The inauguration of the Decathlon logistics space accentuates Romania’s role at regional level and is part of the development strategy of the national retail and distribution network,” Gregory Richarte, Logistics Director said. “The decision to build this center in Romania was a natural one, determined by the local growth potential and the interest in sports manifested by more and more Romanians. Through the activity of this space, we continue our commitment to encourage all Romanians to practice sport and strengthen our direction of involvement and development of local communities.”

By 2018 the centre will double its staff

The logistics centre currently employs around 200, who come from Bucharest and neighbouring cities and villages. By end 2018 the centre will double that number and an increase is expected every year, Richarte added.

The amount invested in the creation of the first logistics center in Romania stands at around EUR 4 million, and the design and development works lasted about 7 months. The warehouse, located in Stefanestii de Jos, Ilfov County, DN1C, will have over 1,500,000 sports items in stock, and between 50,000 and 180,000 products will be delivered daily, depending on the season and orders.

For the first time at international level, the warehouse in Romania became the first space located in the immediate vicinity of a capital city. Its strategic location will ensure the availability of all detained items and allow them to be delivered quickly to all stores.

Supply centre for 30 stores in 3 countries

Besides supplying the 30 stores located in Greece and Bulgaria, including the national network of 20 retail spaces, the logistics center will also deliver the products requested from the online store www.decathlon.ro, with online trade being an important component in the development of the Decathlon retail .

The first Decathlon Supply Center in Romania meets the highest international standards of design and safety and has been built according to the most modern technology. In addition to systems that help reduce processing time and reduce human error, the new headquarters provide more benefits to employees, including a basketball court and a fitness room.

At the local level, Decathlon has a network of 20 commercial spaces with extensive national coverage. Since the beginning of 2017, the network has been developed with a new store – the shopping center in Botosani, the fifth in the region of Molgdavia. Also this year the Decathlon Pallady store was expanded, and since August has a size of 4.200 suare meters.
