Gabriela Firea will become the first female mayor of Bucharest, according to the TV news stations in Romania, which cite the results of exit-polls from the Sunday local elections.

The first partial official results show that Firea got 43.56 percent of the votes, while Dan got 29.05 percent. The liberal candidate Catalin Predoiu had 10.74 percent.

The Central Electoral Office (BEC) published these results after counting the votes in 95 polling stations, representing 7.58 percent of the total votes.

According to the surveys, she got over 40 percent of the votes in Bucharest, beating the leader of the Union for Saving Bucharest (USB), Nicusor Dan.

In a CURS-AVANGARDE survey commissioned by national broadcaster TVR she got 42.48 percent of the votes. According to an IRES exit-poll commissioned by Digi24, Firea got 42.1 percent. The results did  not take into consideration the last two hours of voting. The polling stations were closed at 21.00.

Firea, 43, started her political career in 2012, when she was elected as senator. She is a member of the left-wing party PSD.

She has previously worked as a journalist and managed several business newspapers. She has worked for the media trust founded by media mogul Dan Voiculescu, who is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for the illegal privatization of state-owned company.

Firea is married to Florentin Pandele, the mayor of Voluntari city, which is located near Bucharest. Pandele ran for a new mandate as independent. He exited PSD, claiming that he doesn’t want to harm the political campaign of his wife in any way.

“I want to congratulate the citizens of Bucharest because they won tonight, and I want to ensure even the people that didn’t vote for me that I will be the mayor of everyone,” said Firea in press conference. In this election, she was also supported by left-wing party UNPR.

The head of the PSD, Liviu Dragnea, said that Firea is “full of ambition and courage”. Dragnea said he is very happy for supporting Firea in this campaign.

The voter turnout in Bucharest was 30.7 percent at 20.00. This figure stood at 46.2 percent at a national level.
