BR’s Working Romania Conference | Adelina Dabu (Concordia): The Romanian IT specialist is a widespread myth but most Romanians have no basic IT skills

The future of work it is not all about what the employee want and how he can have a better work-place, it is also about skills, pension funds and taxes, Adelina Dabu, public policy & international relations senior adviser at Concordia Employers Confederation, said on Tuesday at BR’s Working Romania Conference.

“I come with a slightly different point of view on HR. Concordia association represents 10 federations in different industries. Our companies, when they don’t find people to to hire or have problems with the government or other authorities, they come to us. And we can say there is a problem with lack of skills. Besides the lack of workforce, it is also a matter of competences. We complain that we do not have people and we tell the Government, but if we would stay at the same table with the employees’ representatives and all other players and talk about what we will need in the next 5 years, it would be easier to identify what needs to be done to find those employees,” said Dabu.

Unfortunately, there are not many companies able to make a business-plan for the next years to see precisely what they need. “But if we would all talk to each other, the fear of lack of staff for the development of the business would be greatly reduced, and faster solutions would be found.”

“When talking to members of the Parliament, discussions do not relate to what employees want, but to who pays the pensions and taxes. We want flexiblity, but we have to sign papers for presence at work. WE should not forget that the flexible program was only regulated last year and it is not exactly what some companies need,” said Dabu.

Social dialogue would be the most common way to find solutions to the problems we have.

“We can find positive examples in the retail area, where there are already companies looking to attract older people with flexible work schedules. It is a widespread practice in the West and it is also a way of including some categories of people,” said Dabu.

“The skills we need are soft. We live with this myth of the Romanian IT specialist, but most Romanians have no basic knowledge of IT. At the macro level, we should see digital competence training centers, even with European funding.”
