Brexit| Basescu: EU has more to lose than the UK post Brexit

According to former president Traian Basescu, Brexit will have a stronger negative impact on the European Union, rather than on the United Kingdom.

The losses will be felt in Europe,” Basescu, currently the leader of the People’s Movement Party (PMP), told broadcaster B1TV.

The exit of the United Kingdom, the country with the biggest military potential in the EU, is a cause for concern, Basescu stressed. The move could trigger security challenges, because “it is one thing to have the border at the Black Sea and another thing to have it on the Atlantic.” According to the former president, Romania should create a security axis directly with the UK, and not via Bruxelles.

In what regards the impact of Brexit on Romania, Basescu believes that the categories of Romanians that will be affected are those living and working in the UK and the young people who want to study in the country. Overall, the country could receive less money from the EU budget.

According to Basescu, Romania “should fight” in order to make sure it is not losing any money from the 2014-2020 budget. “It will be a long process, do not expect a short one (…) The question is who has to lose and who wins. My opinion is that the EU will lose more that the United Kingdom, Traian Basescu told the Bucharest-based broadcaster.
