Bread consumption in Romania has declined over the past decade from 92 kilograms per inhabitant to just over 82 kilos today, but still remains above the European average of 78 kilograms per inhabitant per year, according to the most recent market study on bakery products.

”10 years ago, consumption was 10 kilograms per person per year, which means it has dropped by one kilogram per person each year, to 82.2 kilograms. Consumption is higher than the European average of 78 kilograms/person/year, but we are not far from it and I believe that per capita consumption in the next period will not decrease by much,” said Aurel Popescu, the president of the Romanian Employers of Milling and Bakery Products – ROMPAN, present at the INDAGRA 2018 Fair.

According to Popescu, this downward trend in bread consumption in recent years is viable and fair, even though Romania has lost Europe’s top spot in this ranking. The market study also shows that biscuits and pasta have registered an increase of 12.5 percent in consumption in 2017 compared to 2016, traditional cozonaci by 9.3 percent, pasta by 3 percent and pastry products by 0.7 percent, but street trade was not included here. On the other hand, flour consumption fell by 2.3 percent, maize by 6.5 percent, and bread consumption by 2.2 percent.

Another interesting thing to note is that the decrease in bread consumption is also caused by the fact that the Romanian consumers choose to purchase more expensive bread with better ingredients and higher energy intake.
