The Finance Minister in the German state of Bavaria, Markus Soeder, strongly opposes the idea that Romania and Bulgaria might enter the euro zone, as stated in both countries’ EU membership agreements.
Soeder said: “Some are even talking about expanding the euro zone. Edmund Stoiber (former Bavarian PM) and the Bavarian government were strongly opposed to the idea of Greece’s accession into the euro zone at the time because they didn’t believe the numbers. So today, one thing needs to be made clear. If you’re considering an expansion of the euro zone we don’t want to talk about numbers and tricks, we don’t want to expand the euro zone towards countries like Bulgaria and Romania. We don’t think this decision would make things better.”
