Basescu on Mayor Firea case: General Prosecutor must reject political games

In response to rumors that he could be sent to court in a case involving Bucharest Mayor Gabriela Firea, former Romanian president Basescu warned that the General Prosecutor should “stay away from political games.” The alleged offenses of threat and blackmail that could see Basescu in court took place in 2014, when he was in office.

I found out from a television station that prosecutors Adina Petrescu and Camelia Sutiman (…) have approved my being sent to court because Mrs. Firea felt threatened and was scared of my declarations regarding her spouse, mayor of Voluntari.

Certainly, when Ponta and Antonescu, accompanied by Mrs. Firea, were gathering and instigating tens of thousands of people to scream on stadiums “Basescu in jail” that was no threat, it was a proof of love. As it was when Mrs. Firea was wrongfully accusing my daughter of having made an illegal transaction. Where were prosecutors Adina Petrescu and Camelia Sutiman when my family was targeted by these threats?

After all, what does Mrs. Camelia Sutiman not do for a new mandate of Chief Prosecutor…

I am convinced that the Prosecutor General should stay away from political games.

P.S. I understand that the Prosecutor General has solved the big cases of the Revolution and of the miners, that is why the time has come for the investigation of political declarations,” Basescu wrote on his Facebook wall.

Current Bucharest mayor filed on 16 April 2014 a criminal complaint against Traian Basescu, head of state at the time, under allegations of threat ad blackmail in connection with statements he made in a TV show.

In an interview with the TV channel Realitatea TV, aired on the evening of 13.04.2014, during television show ‘Power games’, referring to the parliamentary activity of Mrs. Firea, within the parliamentary committee set up to inquire on the legality of the purchase of lands in the area of Nana commune, Calarasi county, he stated: “She would rather know her place and would take care of what takes place on the estate of her husband, because one day he could be missing from home if.. She doesn’t pay attention. I gather that in his parish quite some pretty bad things are happening.”

Last year, in November, prosecutors with the General Prosecutor’s office have suspended investigations in the case after the former president entered mediation proceedings with Gabriela Firea. As the two parties have not reached an agreement, prosecutors have resumed the investigation.
