The new vaccination law will include harsh punishments for parents who refuse to immunize their children, according to PM Mihai Tudose.

The head of government said that an analysis carried out by the Ministry of Heath revealed that some doctors did not promote properly the vaccination program among parents. He added that the authorities should do a better job to raise awareness on this initiative.

“For now, I think that we should get over the first two stages, first of raising awareness and secondly for the common efforts of doctors,” said Tudose.

On the anti-vaccination (anti-vaxxer) movement in Romania, the PM explained that child protection services can intervene if kids are not treated for the flu, for instance. He added that provision could also apply in the case of parents that refuse the vaccination program for the kids.

“You can’t say that you are a parent, you have three kids, and you say: ‘I won’t have them vaccinated because they don’t get sick’. Usually, they get sick,” said the PM.
