American e-commerce giant Amazon is reportedly looking to expand its operations in a second Romanian city, according to local media reports.
The company has been looking for office spaces in Bucharest. According to Profit.ro, Amazon is in talks to lease 10,000 square meters of office space as it plans to hire 1,000 people.
Last year, the company founded by Jeff Bezos had expanded its Research&Development facilities in Iasi city, where in has been present since 2005. The new centre, which covers 13,000 sqm, focuses on Technology Development, Compliance Operations, Retail Services and Digital Imaging. At present, Amazon employs 600 people in Romania.
The retailer, which has 41,000 employees in Europe, announced at the beginning of 2016 that it will increase its staff numbers in all its 80 centres on the continent.
According to data by real estate consultancy CBRE, Bucharest’s modern office stock had 2.56 million sqm by the third quarter of last year. The vacancy rate stood at around 12 percent and prime rents remained stable at an average of about EUR 18.5/sqm/month.
The growing IT sector has been one of the main industries that has pushed up demand for office spaces in Bucharest in recent years. The business process outsourcing (BPO) sector has also expanded in Romania and has generated additional demand for the office market.
