Jeff Bezos becomes the richest man in modern history

Jeff Bezos is the richest person in modern history, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The founder of Amazon has reached a net worth of USD 150 billion – about USD 55 billion more than Bill Gates, the world’s second richest person.

Bezos has also topped Gates in inflation-adjusted terms. In 1999, Gates briefly hit the USD 100 billion mark, but that would be worth about USD 149 billion in today’s money, meaning that Jeff Bezos is now richer.

Amazon shares climbed to a record USD 1,841.95 on Monday, but Bezos may not stay above USD 150 billion for long, as stock is expected to drop again.

Bill Gates would have had a net worth of more than USD 150 billion by now if he had kept assets he has given away, mostly to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation – he has donated almost 700 million Microsoft shares and USD 2.9 billion since 1996.
