Theresa May: Donald Trump told me to sue the EU

Theresa May revealed in an interview with the BBC on Sunday that Donald Trump advised her to sue the EU rather than negotiate for Brexit.

Trump had said at a joint news conference on Friday that May found his suggestions about Brexit too “brutal”.

This comes at a difficult time for Theresa May, whose party members and government ministers are fighting her over her Brexit proposals, some claiming that it is “too soft”. Foreign secretary Boris Johnson and Brexit secretary David Davis resigned last week.

May has defended her Brexit plan of maintaining a close relationship with the EU, claiming that it would allow the UK to strike trade deals with other nations, end free movement of people and end the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice.

Leading conservative Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg has called May’s Brexit White Paper “a bad deal for Britain”, and described the PM as “a Remainer who has remained a Remainer”.
