Terrorist atack in Liege, Belgium: three dead and several wounded

A terrorist attack took place a few hours ago in Liege, Belgium, when a man attack with a knife two policewomen, killed them and then managed to kill a third person who happen to be in the area. About 30 minutes later he was killed by police in a gunbattle at a school.

The attacker is, according to the Belgium radio (RTBF) a 36 year old petty criminal who was on a day-release from a local prison. Investigators were looking to find out if he converted to Islam and had been radicalized in jail.

The man attacked the policewomen from behind with a knife described as a box-cutter, stabbed them and then seized one of their handguns. He shot both women dead before walking down the street and shoot dead a 22 year old man who was sitting in the passenger seat of a parked car.

He found his way into a high school where he took a woman employee hostage. A major intervention by armed police took place and several police were wounded before the attacker was finally killed. Prosecutor Philippe Dulieu said that the event in classed as a terrorist incident, according to Reuters.

The national crisis center, already on high alert since past attacks by the Islamic State, said it was monitoring events but had not raised its alert. According to La Libre Belgique, which quoted a police source, the gunman shouted ”Allah Akbar”.
