China has said it is “shocked” after the United States announced plans for new tariffs that could be applied starting September, escalating the trade war between the two countries, the BBC reports.

The US has listed USD 200 billion worth of additional products it may place tariffs on in the fall, just days after the two countries imposed tariffs of USD 34 billion on each other’s goods. The new list includes over 6,000 items including foods, minerals and consumer goods like handbags, and the tariff would be set at 10 percent.

Beijing says the new threat is “totally unacceptable” and that it would harm the world.

Chinese officials have said that the government would have to take “the necessary counter-measures”.
