In addition to the difficulties it generated, the pandemic managed to do a good thing: unite people, who did not stay indifferent to the needs of NGOs and community projects. In 2020 alone, the Galantom platform managed to raise over 42,000 donations worth 5.2 million lei. Thus, no less than 206 NGOs and 476 community projects were supported with the help of generous people.

The most supported areas were the projects that address health, education, human rights, as well as those dedicated to social inclusion. Education recorded an increase of almost 85% in terms of donations and almost 150% compared to the number of fundraising pages. The field of humanitarian aid has also grown, registering over 70 projects and almost 270 fundraising pages.

Because everything has moved online, fundraising events have continued, adapting to the new context. People were receptive and chose various ways in which they could support projects close to their hearts. Among the most successful initiatives are:

  • Dăruiește ziua ta – ended 2020 with a total of 22,502 donations, amounting to 2,677,059 lei and 2028 days given on the platform;
  • 30 day Fundraising Challenge – raised over 4,800 donations, amounting to approximately 756,000 lei;
  • Santa Claus Galantom – collected over the winter holidays over 1,700 donations, worth almost 300,000 lei;
  • In Memoriam – brought a tribute to the memory of loved ones and raised for those in need about 2,000 donations worth almost 250,000 lei;
  • The sports challenge at home – responded to the pandemic context and mobilized generous people to play sports and donate from the comfort of home. Thus, over 1,300 donations worth almost 130,000 lei were collected;

“Although it was a year  filled with challenges, Romanians kept their spirit of solidarity alive and we were glad to see that, although affected by the pandemic, people mobilized and continued to support the causes they believe in, thus overthrowing the record for donations collected in one year on the Galantom platform. We all know that the NGO environment was one of the most affected by the pandemic, but it was also very involved in fighting it, and support from those at home was a real help. This gives us a lot of faith and makes us aware that if we are so close to each other, we are truly a generous nation”, says Andrei Chirtoc, co-founder of the Envision Association and one of the initiators of the galantom.ro platform.

The platform reunited last year, more than ever, a variety of impressive stories. Omid Ghannadi ran for Hope and Homes for Children and raised funds by participating in the Bucharest Marathon, which was held virtually. Codin Maticiuc was the one who raised the largest amounts on the platform, managing to obtain 2015 donations worth over 260,000 lei for the renovation of the 7th floor of the Fundeni Hospital, where children with oncological diseases are hospitalized. Children also showed their spirit of solidarity. Thus, the kids from Band Music School came together and donated using their passion. They held an online carol concert, raised donations and supported the Children in Difficulty Foundation so they would be able to purchase cribs needed for children with severe neurological disorders living in the CID House CID family. And the stories didn’t stop here. On the occasion of 20 years of activity, Cărturești donated its birthday and chose to support the Pirita Children Association.

Generosity is ageless – statistics have shown that 25-44 remains the age segment with the most donations on the Galantom platform (65.2%), but the percentage of those who donate from other age categories is increasing, for example 18-24 (8.8% in 2020 vs. 6% in 2019). It is also interesting that women donated in greater numbers than men (67.5%).

The largest donation made on the Galantom platform amounted to 10,000 lei, but the donor wished to remain anonymous.
