President Traian Basescu signed the decrees that approve Daniel Chitoiu and Andrei Gerea’s resignations on wednesday. The president also named Victor Ponta and Constantin Nita as interim ministers, in wake of the two PNL departures from the government.

 

Prime-minister Victor Ponta will take over the Finance portfolio, while Cristian Nita (PSD) will be the interim minister of Economy, according to a press release issued by the Romanian Government.

The same release states that Victor Ponta had a conversation with Crin Antonescu about the cabinet’s work in the future.

“Crin Antonescu was asked to forward the four appointments for the ministries in discussion, but the request was rejected by the PNL president who did not wish to cause a conflict with the party’s internal decisions. Later, prime-minister Victor Ponta asked Crin Antonescu to name two PNL candidates for the Ministry of Public Finances and Economy. The president PNL, agian, rejected the request and refused to make any appointments on behalf of PNL”, the release stipulates.

As a result of this discussion, the PM acknowledge the two resignations (Daniel Chitoiu – Finances, Andrei Gerea – Economy) and forwarded to the president, “after USL consulted on the matter”, new propositions for interim management at the two cabinets.

“Malfunctions in the Government apparatus should be avoid with responsibility, the Government believes, and at the same time we should avoid sending any messages of instability to public institutions or signs that could create confusion in the economical and social environment”, the press release shows.

Official sources quoted by MEDIAFAX later declared that Daniel Chitoiu and Andrei Gerea official registered their resignations at the PM’s office, immediately after his discussion with Crin Antonescu. The meeting between the two USL leaders lasted for approximately half an hour.
