Tarom will drop flights on the Bucharest-Sibiu route at the end of the current month, given that the route generates losses. According to the online reservation system, clients that want to fly from Bucharest to Sibiu will have a connecting flight in Vienna or Munich. Prices increased accordingly: EUR 600 for flights between 4 and 11 April.
The total travel time increases to 4-7 hours, which makes a car ride more appealing for those travelling between the two cities.
“Up to this moment, the route was generating losses and it didn’t present much potential for improvement. We will soon meet with representatives from the Sibiu airport to discuss possibilities for improvement”, according to Christian Heinzmann, Tarom general director.
Until the two parties reach an agreement, Bucuresti-Sibiu flights remain suspended.
In the summer of 2013, Tarom announced that for the winter calender it would drop internal routes Bucuresti-Sibiu, Bucuresti-Suceava and Bucuresti-Targu-Mures. PM Victor Ponta came out a few days later and said that he supports internal fligghts at Tarom. In October 2013, Tarom announced that all flights on the Bucuresti-Suceava route suspended but the airline annulled the decision after several politicians intervened.
