For 2014 Nobel Prize in Literature edition, Romania has nominated four writers, Nicolae Breban, Mircea Cartarescu, Norman Manea and former minister of economy, Varujan Vosganian (in picture).

The Romanian Writers’ Union is one of the institutions that receive invitations from the Swedish Academy to nominate writers for the Nobel prizes awards. The main criteria for nominations this year was based on the value of the writers and the translation of their works in foreign languages.

Mircea Cartarescu and Norman Manea are among the best known Romanian writers abroad, whose books have been translated to foreign languages. Manea has become one of the most important contemporary Eastern European writers, being the most translated Romanian author with books in 20 languages. Mircea Cartarescu is a poet, novelist and essayist, member of the Romanian Writers’ Union and of the European Cultural Parliament. His works have been translated into more than 14 languages, bringing him international fame.

Former minister Varujan Vosganian writes poems and fiction. Some of his latest books include Jesus with 1,000 arms – poems, from 2004, and The Book of Whispers, from 2009.

Nicolae Breban, is a Romanian novelist and essayist who has been writing since the 60s. Some of his novels were translated to French, Italian, English, Russian, Swedish, among others.

The selection procedure

The Nobel Committee sends out nomination forms to 600-700 individuals and organizations qualified to nominate for the Nobel Prize in Literature in September, for the next year’s edition of the gala. The completed forms must reach the Nobel Committee not later than 31 January of the following year. The Committee then screens the nominations and submits a list for approval by the Academy. In April, after further studies, the Committee selects 15–20 names for consideration as preliminary candidates by the Academy, while in May, The Committee whittles down the list to five priority candidates to be considered by the Academy. During summertime, the members of the Academy read and assess the work of the final candidates and also prepares individual reports. In early October, the Academy chooses the Nobel Laureate in Literature. A candidate must receive more than half of the votes cast. The Nobel Laureates names are then announced. The Nobel Prize Award Ceremony takes place on 10 December in Stockholm, where the Nobel Laureates receive their Nobel Prize, which consists of a Nobel Medal and Diploma, and a document confirming the prize amount. Moreover, the statutes of the Nobel Foundation restrict disclosure of information about the nominations, whether publicly or privately, for 50 years. The restriction concerns the nominees and nominators, as well as investigations and opinions related to the award of a prize.

The Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded 106 times to 110 Nobel Laureates between 1901 and 2013. Last year’s winner was Alice Munro, “master of the contemporary short story”. More about the Nobel prize in literature, here.
