At the end of last year, Romanians did EUR 20.6 million worth of shopping from their mobile devices, of which EUR 13.8 million were online payments from smartphones and tablets and EUR 6.8 million were SMS transactions, according to data from NETOPIA mobilPay.

“2013 was the year of m-commerce around the world, and Romania was no exception. Of course, we cannot compare the volume with that in the United States or Western Europe, where online payments via smartphones and tablets have become natural, but more and more Romanians have started to understand and prefer this simple method of payment that is secure and more available like any other,” says Antonio Eram, CEO and founder NETOPIA mobilPay.

Approximately 40 percent of these total payments were processed by NETOPIA mobilPay.

From the total online payments by card processed by the company last year, 6 percent corresponding to EUR 4.6 million, were carried out from smartphones and tablets. At the same time, SMS transactions amounted to EUR 3.4 million last year, representing nearly half of the total market.

For this year, NETOPIA representatives estimate the average rate of purchases made from mobile devices will double to a level of 12 percent of the total online payments by card.
