The painting “The Fake Rothko” designed by the Romanian artist Adrian Ghenie, who is considered one of the most famous contemporary artists worldwide, was sold on July 1, with GDP 1.426.500 in an auction organized by the prestigious Sotheby auction house, in London, UK.
The estimated value of Ghenie’s painting was between GDP 250,000 to 350,000 and was considered a surprise, but set a new record for the artist at auction.
The painting was made in 2010, it is an oil on canvas. The previous record of the artist was set in June 2013, when Ghenie sold a painting worth USD 332,825.
This June, Adrian Ghenie was portrayed by the famous publication The Independent, presenting snapshots of Ghenie’s childhood, such as stories about his grandmother who used to bring animals into the house in the winter – “like the Brothers Grimm” and his father, who was a dentist but also in the secret police, which gave the young student a certain cachet, notes the publication.
