The country has come one step closer to update the reimbursed drugs list for the first time in five years, after the ministry of health has completed the assessment of new drugs.

Authorities have approved 130 new molecules and rejected 37 and the updated list should be on the table of the government for final approval by the end of January 2014, according to health minister Eugen Nicolaescu.

“It is the first time that a new reimbursed drugs list is drawn up using an assessment methodology agreed at an international level, which required additional organizational and operational activities,” said Nicolaescu.

Over 120 physicians and professors worked on the new list, which will allow Romanian patients to be treated with innovative drugs, which have been rolled out in Western Europe in the past few years.  The new medicines cover a wide array of areas such as oncology and diabetes.

“Opening the list of reimbursed and free drugs will have long term beneficial effects even on the healthcare budget because in time there will be lower costs for hospitalization and reintegration of patients in the society,” commented Oana-Martha Igrisan, communications director at the Romanian Association of International Medicine Manufacturers (ARPIM).

Nicolaescu said the new list should be rolled out by next March, along with a new package of basic healthcare services.

The specialists that assessed the new drugs have called for special prescription protocols for 120 of the new molecules.

The updated drugs list will run a cost of up to EUR 156 million next year, which will be fully covered by producers through the claw back tax, according to Nicolaescu. He added the ministry will seek “solutions” to finance the list in the coming years.
