Romania receives EUR 74 million for the decontamination of areas polluted with oil

The European Commission has approved an investment of EUR 74.3 million from the European Regional Development Fund to clean several areas contaminated with petroleum products from various counties in Romania. With this finance, Romania will be able to meet its environmental obligations, through this investment contributing to remedy the severe damage of the environment and combating pollution. All these measures will improve the quality of life of Romanian citizens and increase long-term safety of the inhabitants of the areas decontaminated. Also, during implementation of the project will be created 30 jobs, informs European Commission through a press release.

Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn said that “By the rehabilitation of the areas contaminated by oil over time, this project will improve living standards for the inhabitants of Romania, bringing benefits not only from the point of view of environmental protection at the local level, but also for the safety of persons and on the long term, of the local economic development”.

EU contribution will be EUR 74.3 million from a total investment of EUR 119.7 million and it will be covered by ERDF fund, implementing the project by the end of 2015.

The most important areas that will be cleaned are near Doljchim, Petrobrazi, Arpechim, the rehabilitation of tailings wastewater from Dâmbovnic and Suseni, extended component covering 25 exploration and production wells located in 9 counties and extended component covering two stores oil products, located in Braila and Vaslui counties.
