The political crisis that rocked the country this summer has worsened the perception of the EU and NATO, who are no questionining Romania’s rule of law, warned on Monday the Romanian President Traian Basescu.

The president said Romania is in a difficult situation from a political point of view. This was triggered by the Parliament’s suspension of Traian Basescu, followed by his return in office due to a failed impeachment referendum. The president accused the government of attempting to forge the referendum results by adding illegal votes and of trying to change the electoral lists after the voting was closed.

Romania’s ability to organize free elections is questions after the referendum fraud, according to the president. He warned Romania has to bear the “shame” of having an OSCE mission supervising elections.

“As you may know, as a result of the events in July, August, Romania’s rule of law came under scrutiny,” said Basescu. He argued this has also delayed Romania’s accession in the Schengen area.

“The most significant event that impacted Romanians, not politicians, was as a result of the July-August event, in September, when a decision on Schengen should have been made, it was delayed, as Romania left the political criteria that were fulfilled prior to the EU accession negotiations,” said the president.

The president warned the Mechanism for Cooperation and Verification (MCV), due to be published by the European Commission this winter, will be “disastrous”. The result was altered in the last six months, according to President Basescu.

“The negotiations for appointing the Ombudsman haven’t been carried out, as we pledged, to an Ombudsman through political consensus. The measures undertook by the judiciary against important politicians were constantly denied. These elements can’t characterize the rule of law. These are elements that send us backwards many years and all the depreciation took place in the last six months,” explained the president.
