Customers of telecom operator RCS & RDS can take up internet speeds of 500 Mbps and 1 Gbps from the operator– packaged in the offers Digi Net Fiberlink 500 and Digi Net Fiberlink 1000- at prices of RON 49 and RON 59, respectively. The upload speeds for both packages will be 100 Mbps.

The company has invested more than USD 2 billion into infrastructure up to now, according to Valentin Popoviciu (in picture), business development manager in RCS&RDS.

With this offer, which is valid starting November, RCS&RDS becomes the first mass- service telecom operator to offer this kind of speeds for fixed internet on the Romanian market.

At the end of August, telecom operator UPC Romania, part of Liberty Global, announced its network is technically ready to sustain internet at speeds of up to 1 Gbps. However, the company officials said it only offers internet speeds of up to 200 Mbps, since “not too many residential clients may want 1 Gbps.”

“This service places us among the few operators in the world which offer speeds of 1 Gbps,” said Popoviciu.

The service coverage spans over 150 localities in both urban and rural areas, after the operator expanded its fiber optic backbone.

RCS&RDS offers two types of routers, one that supports speeds of 100 Mbps and one that supports speeds of up to 1 Gbps. The routers are manufactured by Chinese company ZTE for RCS&RDS. The installation of the new internet service lasts a few days, and takes less for existing customers. However, to benefit from these speeds, customers need to have superior hardware configuration.

The packages target individual customers, but the operator announced it will soon be coming up with a dedicated business offer.

“We believe fiber optic is the future,” said Valentin Popoviciu. “Transmission via optic fiber will always be faster than through radio waves,” he explained.
